SOFSEM (SOFtware SEMinar) is a full seven-day international meeting devoted to the theory and practice of software systems. Its aim is to foster cooperation among professionals from academia and practice. The program consists of a series of Invited Talks, given by prominent professionals and researchers, and Contributed Talks and Posters selected by the Program Committee. It offers a unique opportunity to obtain quickly a representative overview of the areas of computer science which are selected as the topics of the year. The proceedings will contain both invited and contributed papers. They will be published by the Springer-Verlag in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series (LNCS) and distributed at the conference. The working language of SOFSEM is English. The conference site provides an optimal framework for discussions, meetings, establishing contacts, and socializing. SOFSEM is especially suited for young computer scientists. The silver jubilee SOFSEM'98 will feature a special block of invited talks on major achievements in selected areas of computer science. Besides, a series of invited talks will be presented in the following areas: Distributed and Parallel Systems, Electronic Commerce, Electronic Documents and Digital Libraries, and Trends in Algorithmics. |

SOFSEM'98 will be held at the J. Sverma Hotel (see enclosed pictures) in Jasna. The hotel is located in a beautiful mountain area of the Demanovska Valley (Demanovska dolina) in the Low Tatras (Nizke Tatry), about half an hour from a regional centre Liptovsky Mikulas, a heart of the Liptov region (see enclosed map).
Due to its beautiful middle range mountain sceneries (sunny meadows, deep forests, etc.) the Liptov region is one of the most attractive parts of Slovakia. It offers many tourist attractions and cultural opportunities (see information about Liptovsky Mikulas and its surroundings).
The conference takes place in the middle Slovakia mountain resort Jasna (see enclosed map). The conference site is accessible from international airports in Kosice (about 2.5 hrs. by car or IC/EC trains) or Bratislava (about 3.5 hrs. by car or IC/EC trains).
Enclosed you will find detailed information about
Organizers are going to arrange a special SOFSEM'98 shuttle connecting Liptovsky Mikulas with the conference site on Friday (20.11.1998) afternoon/evening and on Saturday (21.11.1998) morning. The fixed schedule of the SOFSEM'98 shuttle departures from the railway station of Liptovsky Mikulas will be announced later (about 2 weeks before the event). In order to schedule the shuttle departures to the convenience of most of the participants, we encourage them to inform organizers about their expected arrivals to Liptovsky Mikulas.
The J. Sverma Hotel is located about 700 m from a terminal of the regular bus line from Liptovsky Mikulas (see enclosed orientation plan).
The full version of the SOFSEM'98 call for papers is available either in the text or in the postscript form.

The conference fee reduction is also offered to the members of societies co-operating with the Slovak Society for Computer Science - SSCS, i.e. to the members of ACM, OCG - Osterreichische Computer Gesellschaft, CSCS - Czech Society for Computer Science.
The SOFSEM'98 Organizing Committee offers also a limited number of grants. The young authors of accepted contributed papers will be preferred. The applications for grants should be sent to the SOFSEM'98 Secretariat not later than 1.8.1998. An application should contain a short justification of request. SOFSEM is known for its unforgetable atmosphere
which is influenced, besides the typical choice of location, by
rich accompanying social and cultural programs.
Following the SOFSEM traditions, the organizers are going to
arrange a welcome banquet on Saturday night, a cultural evening
probably on Monday (a pantomime and a guitar duet), an excursion
on Thusday afternoon and a conference dinner on Friday evening.
We strongly encourage the SOFSEM participants to contribute to
the cultural program of the jubilee SOFSEM'98 !!!
Since the scientific programme takes place in
the mornings and late afternoons, time after lunch (from about
13:00 to 15:30) can be devoted to individual trips revealing
beauties of the SOFSEM conference site. As for SOFSEM'98, the
participants can enjoy the surrounding sceneries of the
Low Tatras.
An afternoon bus trip to the famous karstic Freedom cave (Jaskyna slobody), one of the biggest and most
beautiful caves in Slovakia, is planned. In case of a pleasant
wheather an afternoon cable-car trip to Chopok, the second
highest peak of the Low Tatras, is possible.
